August 2003: Privacy...And What to Do About It

The highly publicized Do-Not-Call list is generating a lot of talk among legislators these days. Your friends at The Riverside Group have made the decision to take a leadership role in this important issue. Here’s our plan:

The Riverside Group will stop sending informational tips sheets by fax no later than September 2003.

We will continue to deliver these tips by e-mail to our opt-in list. However, soon we will tighten our definition of opt-in to require written and signed permission (electronic signatures will be OK).

Like many businesses, we communicate with our customers and industry friends via US mail. We will increase these efforts.

The Bottom Line
If you haven’t subscribed to our e-mail list and rely on the fax for these tips, you won’t get them. And, unless you send us written permission to continue receiving them, at some point we’ll stop sending them to you via e-mail. Please return the attached sheet so you can stay up-to-date and continue giving your customers a finishing edge. In our opinion, providing useful information and project design advice is an excellent way to differentiate you and your company.

Speaking of Direct Mail …
Self mailers often need remoistenable glue strips. If you know the basics of remoist glue, you can make your direct mail projects go smoothly and capture a larger part of the growing direct mail market. (FYI: A recent edition of the Kiplinger Letter forecasts that the United States Postal Service will not raise postal rates for many years.)

Project Design
Self mailers can include many features such as seam-glue formed BREs (business reply envelopes), U-shape remoist glue strips for maximum design flexibility, micro perforations for laser printer applications, die cut perforated Rolodex cards, bangtails, fugitive glue for spot sealing and wafer seals. In addition, endless fold configurations can be selected for maximum production efficiency and eye-appealing design.

Unintended Glue Activation
Let your finisher know the end use of your product. This will help them help you anticipate and reduce post production problems. For example, if your project is shipping to the south and will remain in hot trucks with internal temperatures approaching 140?, glue strips might reactivate causing a “bricking problem which reduces functionality. In addition, if your product will be run through a laser printer, your finisher must use the right adhesives and perforation wheels. Otherwise, the end result might be a sticky mess.
