July 2004: Build Interest with Scratch-Off Applications
 |
Scratch off coatings aren't limited to the lottery - they can be used to generate interest in promotional pieces such as direct mail, magazine inserts and more! |
What's the best part about an instant lottery ticket (aside from winning, of course)? Most likely, it's the anticipation of scratching off the game piece to reveal what's underneath. While lottery tickets and similar game pieces are two of the best-known uses of scratch-off coatings, they're a great way to build interest in any brand or message and add interactivity to printed products. Product or event promotions, direct mail pieces and magazine inserts can all incorporate the use of scratch-off coatings.
Scratch-Off Formulas
At The Riverside Group, we specialize in two varieties of scratch-offs. Ultraviolet (UV) scratch-off formulas are economical, attractive and allow products to be turned around quickly. Keep in mind, however, that UV scratch-offs are limited to standard gold and silver colors. Foil scratch-offs are available in a variety of attractive colors and patterns.
There are several additional possibilities for your scratch-off applications. Some can include messages or images sreen-printed onto scratch-off coverings, and yes, we can apply scented "scratch-and-sniff" coatings as well!
Helpful Planning Tips
Here are a few important details to consider when planning a project that will include a scratch-off application:
Allow slight registration variance: While we can apply scratch-offs in any shape and size, keep in mind that scratch-off application requires slight registration variance (as with other finishing techniques such as die cutting and foil stamping. For most scratch-off applications, keep a 1/16th inch margin around the scratch-off area to ensure complete coverage.
Don't forget the wax - While wax-based varnishes and coatings should be avoided for finishing processes such as gluing, they're essential to the success of a scratch-off application. Without a wax surface underneath, the scratch-off coating may bond to the paper and prevent it from being easily removed.
Avoid heavy ink coverage underneath scratch-offs – When planning a scratch-off application, keep in mind that the scratch-off material may not completely obscure heavy or dark printing underneath. We suggest that customers apply scratch-offs only over halftone or lighter ink coverage.
