July 2007- Many Choices for Book Closures
There are dozens of ways to bind and decorate a book or other bound product using a variety of processes and materials. Another way to make your bound projects distinctive is through the use of features such as closures. There are several different forms that closures may take; here are a few you may want to implement on your products:
Magnets and Snaps
A closure solution should strike a balance between function and form; it should not impede the usage, enjoyment or appearance of the product. Closures such as magnets and snaps are popular for their versatility and economy. They’re also unobtrusive; magnets can be hidden beneath book cloth or a printed paper cover so they don’t interrupt the appearance of the product.
As with many other closure options, magnets and snaps are often incorporated into a flap that wraps over the face of the book. Products such as journals and children’s books often take advantage of magnet or snap closures.
Planning Tip – A case-bound book, binder or similar product will need special planning to incorporate a magnet closure. Typically, the board is kiss-cut to allow placement of the magnet and metal plate to which it adheres.
Closures for High-End Applications
High-end projects call for a solution that matches the level of detail of the rest of the piece. Closures such as ribbons, leather straps or a string-and-button add eye-catching appeal and create a small element of user interaction.
Planning Tip – Build some additional production time into your schedule when incorporating a decorative closure for your project. Many of these options require additional materials and processing beyond producing the book itself.
Not Just for Books
Books aren’t the only products that can benefit from closures. Marketing kits, CD holders and ring binders are just a few of the applications that commonly use decorative closures.
