The Riverside Group Avoids A Nightmare After Trailer Splits In Half
“We Were Able to Salvage the Entire Run,” said V.P. Fred Daubert
Rochester, N.Y. - The Riverside Group, a full-service bindery and finisher located here, was able to skirt a nightmare recently when a truck carrying 137,000 books from a customer split in half the moment it reached the company’s loading dock. Working carefully to avoid further damage, The Riverside Group was able to salvage all 22 lots.
“This is one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever seen,” said Fred Daubert, Vice President. “Fortunately, the incident occurred right at our loading dock. That allowed us to move quickly to secure and then remove all skids.”
The truck was carrying a full 40,000 lb. load when it passed beneath a railroad bridge after missing the entrance to The Riverside Group facility. The trailer scraped the underside of the bridge as it passed, giving off a shower of sparks, said Daubert. The truck made a four-mile loop back to the Riverside facility entrance, where the trailer split as the driver reversed it into the loading area.
A crane was brought in to lift the center of the broken trailer. The skids were then removed using a special fork lift. Skids located at the front of the trailer were dragged toward the rear using chains prior to removal.
The book project was on its way to Riverside for perfect binding. In addition, the books were die cut to include pocket covers and a die cut window on the front cover that registered to a slider. It would have been extremely expensive to reprint had it not been salvaged, said Daubert.
“It was a gorgeous project, with plenty of intricate die cutting,” said Daubert. “Needless to say, our client was pleased that we were able to save it and still perform the binding, die cutting and other production steps within a reasonable schedule.”
